May's Grumpy Roaster: Lamari (Papua New Guinea)

| /

May's Coffee of the Month:

  • Region: Obura-Wonenara, Eastern Highlands, Papua New Guinea
  • Process: Washed, A/X
  • Altitude: 1700-2000 MASL
  • Roast Level: Medium
  • Sensory Notes: Honey, Mango, Chocolate, Hickory, Citrus

The namesake of the Lamari River in Papua New Guinea’s Eastern Highlands, this coffee is grown and harvested at a higher altitude than most, which is a good thing. This becomes quite clear as soon as the coffee goes through a grinder. An explosion of alluring sweetness in the fragrance ensues and things only get further enhanced with the addition of water. Honey, Mango and Chocolate are the dominant sensory notes here, but don’t be surprised if you also catch a whiff of smoky/spicy hickory or a hint of citrus for a moment or two. A very complex cup of coffee is what we are dealing with here this month. So, don’t be shy, give it a try and see what else there is to find. Enjoy.
